What causes fingernails to have ridges from the cuticle to the edge?

If you go through an unhealthy spell you will get a ridge, like if your body hasn't recieved enough nutrition. You can get rid of them with a nail buffer board though, works really well. What causes fingernails to have ridges from the cuticle to the edge?
Dry cuticles, genetics, or disease.

The first two are far more common than the last one, and ridges are not at all unusual. Getting rid of them is probably the biggest reason many women get professional manicures.

Were the ridges going the *other* direction (across the nail horizontally), that's pretty much always some disease process. What causes fingernails to have ridges from the cuticle to the edge?
bad diet you need more calcium and eat lots of fruit
It is a sign of poor immunity.
if you have a change in your diet, say its the weekend an instead of eating like you normally do during the week you pigout on junk food. well in about a week your nails would have a ridge on them.
